WOLCOTT —
Pioneer boys basketball coach Pat Skaggs knew that the Friday night matchup at Tri-County would be a dogfight, and was he ever on the money.
Thanks to a big night from Mitchell Williams and Brandon Scruggs the Panthers were able to pull away from a good Tri-County team 69-56. With the win the Panthers wrapped up sole possession as champs of the MWC.
“It feels really good to win it outright,” said Scruggs. “Splitting it with Caston last year kind of left a bad taste in our mouths and we didn’t want to share it this year.”
Pioneer got off to a slow start offensively but big second and fourth quarters helped the Panthers hold off the hot-shooting Cavaliers. The Panthers, who are capable of bombing from long range, hit on just four over the course of the game while Tri-County nailed 12 from behind the arc. Each time Pioneer would start to build a small lead, the Cavaliers would bomb away and keep within striking distance.
Williams and Scruggs each finished with 21 points to lead the Panther attack. Matt Dorris ended with 11 points while Carter Skaggs chipped in 10.
Pick up Sunday’s Pharos-Tribune for complete coverage of the game.
